Learn more about this agency Responsibilities The incumbent is a internationally recognized expert in the field of Computational Aerothermodynamics. The incumbent will serve as a technical team leader in the development and application of highly advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods for the solution of hypervelocity, chemically reacting flowfields over advanced space transportation vehicles and planetary entry vehicles. The studies performed by the incumbent represent major contributions to the Agency’s goal to provide world-class capability to predict heating distributions, aerodynamic performance, aerodynamic pressure/shear loads and flow field characteristics for advanced/future space transportation and planetary vehicles more accurately and more rapidly. This work is critically important to reduce design conservatism, risk, and cost and to enhance the safety of future entry vehicles because the hypersonic-hypervelocity environments encountered in flight cannot be duplicated in experimental ground-based facilities, thereby placing great reliance on CFD predictions. Assignments focus on the development of the most advanced methods that are possible using the Navier-Stokes equation set for chemically reacting flows and include: (1) develop unstructured, viscous CFD code for an order of magnitude more rapid prediction of hypersonic-hypervelocity, chemically reacting flowfield (i.e., flight environment) about complex, highly three-dimensional advanced aerospace and planetary entry vehicles; (2) develop computational capability to accurately predict reaction control system plume-flowfield-vehicle surface interactions at supersonic-hypersonic conditions for laminar and turbulent boundary/shear layers; (3) develop computational capability to predict merged continuum-noncontinuum flowfields about entry vehicles at high altitudes; (4) advance simulation capabilities as needed to support diverse Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL) mission architectures; and (5) support and advocate experimental, ground-based aerothermodynamic studies and flight data analysis as appropriate. Incumbent provides technical guidance and mentorship to both junior and senior engineers. This position requires an extremely high level of expertise and a comprehensive working knowledge in advanced computational fluid dynamics methods, thermodynamics, gas dynamics, high-temperature gas properties, radiative and convective heat transfer, and thermal/chemical nonequilibrium flows.
